GEOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENT - By Luke Voulgaris AUSTRALIAS POPULATION Australia’s growing population changes over time as the combined factors change, such as overseas migration, internal migration gain, internal migration loss, high fertility rate and ageing population. Growth in Australia’s population is made up of three main components: †¢ Natural increase—births - deaths †¢ Net overseas migration— the net gain or loss of population through immigration and emigration. †¢ Refugees- people who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster. Natural increase The rate of natural increase is different across many countries; it’s the difference between birth rate and death rate. In countries such as Australia the average children a mother would have was around 1.8. In countries such as Africa the average woman has around 5 children, as the fatality rates are much higher. Natural increase is important to keep Australia’s population growing, and more generations of Australians coming into the world. The births are around twice the size of the deaths that occur, so for every person that dies, around two babies are born. Refugees Refugees are one of the important assets in our population growth, as they take up the less popular labour-based jobs, and really creates a positive economic impact for the wellbeing of our country.
